“The History & Creation of the Paul Revere Museum of Discovery"
plus a special add-on discussion regarding the parallels in designing this museum with that of the Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy located at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy
The Paul Revere Museum of Discovery & Innovation (MoDI) is a different kind of history museum. Instead of only showing artifacts, MoDI offers visitors interactive simulations and various historical viewpoints. Visitors of all ages want to return again and again. Located in two historic buildings located at the Paul Revere Heritage Site in Canton, the museum celebrates innovation and encourages people to see the world in new ways.
Paul Revere was an uncommon figure who helped shape two major revolutions: the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. MoDI focuses on Revere’s post-American Revolution role as a business leader, inventor, visionary, and early STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) thinker. Museum visitors explore how the Revere family helped drive America’s economic growth.
Many people are unaware that Paul Revere established the Revere Copper Company in Canton, Massachusetts, in 1801, transforming from a silversmith into a major industrialist. He built a copper rolling mill along the Neponset River to produce copper sheathing for the U.S. Navy and cast bells and cannons. Today, the original rolling mill building has been preserved as part of the Paul Revere Heritage Site.
Special Guest Speaker
John Morton
Executive Director of Paul Revere Museum of Innovation & Discovery (MoDI)
John came to the MoDI in 2025, after previously working in several New England museums, and for several years as a professor of early American History. He was able to help coordinate the final design and construction of the Paul Revere MoDI, and its opening to the public in January 2026. Immediately prior to joining MoDI John was a visiting professor at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. There, he worked closely with the Samson Museum for the History of Pharmacy, supervising student projects and helping the museum take stock of its collections. In his talk, John will compare his experiences at the Samson Pharmacy Museum with his past year spent building and opening a museum dedicated to industry and innovation. Our members may find this aspect of John's presentation particularly intriguing.
